The elegant Petřín Watchtower is no doubt the true dominant of Petřín Hill. Give yourself and your children a chance to enjoy the unforgettable views of the unique panorama of Prague and a considerable part of the Czech Republic. If the visibility is good you might even be able to spot Snezka - the highest summit of the Czech Republic.
Your children are sure to appreciate a trip to the peak of Petrin on the popular cable car. They will have to step up the 229 stairs to the watchtower but the impressive view offered by the watchtower is surely worth the effort!
The idea of building a miniature copy of the famous Eiffel Tower was born in the minds of the Club of Czech Tourists returning from the Paris World Exhibition. The vision of Petřín Hill with a cable car and a watchtower was later described by one of them, Dr. Kurz, in an article in the Der Politik newspaper. Apparently, the description was so vivid and attractive that the Czech public started shortly after contributing financial donations in the form of allotment certificates worth 50 goldens to pay for the realization of Kurz’s vision. The Petřín Watchtower was inaugurated on August 20th, 1891. You can enjoy the result of this national upheaval even now. What’s more, in the basement of the watchtower, you can visit the exhibition of the Czech genius Jara Cimrman.
