The Prague City Library (Městská knihovna) has much to offer to almost everyone in Prague. Among its visitors and users are young readers, pensioners, and pleasure readers, as well as the most demanding readers and scholars, since the whole City Library network is user-friendly and offers an extensive list of titles to borrow.
The headquarters of the City Library is located in Mariánské Square in Prague, not far from the Staroměstská metro station, while the library’s branches are spread all around the great city of Prague. The Mariánské Square building, which underwent a thorough reconstruction in the second half of the 1990s, is certainly worth a visit even if you aren’t sure if you’ll want to register for a library membership (which, by the way, costs only 80 Kc per year, so is entirely worth trying out at least for the first year). Do not miss the unique tower of books - an installation by Slovak artist Matej Kren. Other works of art can be seen at regular exhibitions, which the library building proudly displays. If you happen to experience information overload, you’ll surely enjoy the on-site cafe with its low prices and pleasant, relaxing environment.
The Prague City Library is open every Tuesday through Saturday, and apart from a wide selection of Czech books, readers will also enjoy the range of English books as well as books in other foreign languages and a huge range of genres (prose, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, crime stories, drama and more) – surely something for every reader. Besides this, the library also offers CD and DVD rentals, sheet music and maps, a reading room with newspapers and magazines, Internet connection and other services. What’s more, all the library entries are listed in a well-organized electronic catalogue, which can also be accessed via the Internet from your home. The Prague City Library is a true gateway to the world of entertainment and knowledge for the whole family.
