There have been rich cultural contacts between Italy and the Czech lands ever since the 16th century when an Italian minority lived in Prague consisting partly of the Jesuit Order members coming from Italy. Among the historical documents of this cultural influence are, for example, the Italian chapel, part of the Klementinum complex, or the Italian hospital in Mala Strana. Maintaining and deepening the Czech-Italian cultural relations is the main goal of the institution named Istituto Italiano di Cultura or the Italian Cultural Institute Prague.
The Italian Cultural Institute offers to everyone interested Italian language lessons, educational, cultural and entertainment events and also the library which is run by the Institute on Sporkova Street in the Mala Strana quarter of Prague. The Italian Institute library offers to the interested public over 18,000 volumes most of which are in Italian. Apart from a rich selection of books, which you can browse through also at your home thanks to the online library catalogue (accessible from the Institute website), the library also features selected Italian newspapers and magazines, which can be read in the library and which feature titles focusing on society, literature, the fine arts, theater, architecture or design.
If the Italian Institute library caught your attention and if you are considering visiting it, the best time to do so is at the beginning of the working week. The opening hours are the longest on Mondays and Tuesdays (9:30 to 18:00). On Wednesdays the library is opened in the early evening, from 16:00 to 19:30 and from Thursday to Sunday the library is closed. Access to the library as well as on-site book borrowing is free, however, if you wish to borrow some of the books for home, you need to become a registered member and pay the registration fee. You can combine a visit to the library with attending one of the cultural events organized by the library, whose list can be found on the Institute website. Visit the Italian Cultural Institute Prague and let the rich and colorful Italian culture bring you plenty of inspiration and enjoyment.
