Divoká Šárka Natural Preserve

The Divoká Šárka natural preserve is an ideal place for long walks or even one-day trips for all Prague citizens and visitors who like romantic natural scenery. Besides beautiful nature, Divoká Šárka also offers many options for sporting and cultural possibilities.

Divoká Šárka is located in the area of Prague 6 approximately between the Dejvice district and Ruzyně airport and is the oldest nature preserve in Prague (since 1964). The reason why this area is protected is because the landscape in Divoká Šárka is of a unique geological, botanical, zoological and archeological value. Many historically and archeologically valuable objects have been found in the territory of Divoká Šárka (from fossilized mammoth bones, graves from the New Stone Age, to Slavic ceramics). Moreover, between the 7th and 9th centuries a large Slavic fort was located there, one of the centers of power in central Bohemia, whose ramparts are still evident in the area of the Džbán pass.

From the beginning of the 20th century Šárka has been used mainly for recreation by Prague citizens. The garden restaurant run by the Veselík family, where various social events with live music were held regularly, was popular. Also the popular lido that has been making the hot summer days more bearable since the 1930s has been preserved until now. Besides bathing, Prague citizens are attracted to Šárka mainly because of its natural beauty, since the area offers a unique landscape divided by the meandering Šárka stream. Also the large pond Džbán, whose surroundings offers many sporting possibilities including ball and water games, and refreshment, or the popular pub Dívčí skok are worth visitors’ attention. Another important aspect of Divoká Šárka is the annual outdoor theater, where grand operas are staged deep in the park to the delight of the public.
