The marionette theater of Spejbl and Hurvínek has been operating in Prague for dozens of years now and its wooden heroes have never stopped charming both children and adult spectators.
The Spejbl and Hurvínek Theater was founded in Plzeň in 1930 by Professor Josef Skupa and the theater became the first modern professional marionette theater in what was at that time Czechoslovakia. In 1944 Josef Skupa was imprisoned for anti-regime activities and the theater was closed by Nazi authorities. In 1945, when Skupa fled from imprisonment, the theater moved to Prague under his leadership. After Skupa's death in 1957 the voice actor for the main characters Spejbl and Hurvínek became Skupa's student Miloš Kirschner, who had formerly alternated both characters with Skupa during his lifetime. Since Miloš Kirschner's death the voice actor of both characters has been the talented Martin Klásek.
Ever since its foundation, the theater has been known for its humorous and even satirical tone and peculiar approach to the problems of the contemporary world. Nowadays, the Spejbl and Hurvínek Marionette Theater focuses mainly on plays for children, but several times a month it also stages performances aimed at adult audiences. You will always be entertained and charmed while in the company of the characters Spejbl, his son Hurvínek, Hurvínek's best friend Mánička, Mánička's grandmother Mrs. Kateřina Hovorková and Žeryk - the Spejbl family dog.
