National Museum

Galleries and Museums in Prague

Perched atop Wenceslas Square is the main building of the National Museum in Prague. The National Museum has over ten buildings in the capital and outside of the city, however the main building is by far the most grand.

The objective of the National Museum is to further develop a Czech national identity within the Czech lands and to the world itself. The collection of the museum covers a wide area and includes botany, entomology, anthropology, zoology, archeology, mycology, paleontology, mineralogy and more.

The main building, a neo Renaissance structure is a beautiful gem of a building and treats its visitors to an impressive interior with a grand main hall boasting a deep red and gold theme. The whole museum showcases wall paintings of famous castles and fortresses throughout the Czech Republic, patterned marble floors, busts of important Czech figures and more. The objects housed inside include an extensive mineralogy collection as well as botany, anthropology, archaeology, entomology, paleontology and zoology collections. The bottom level of the museum is dedicated to temporary exhibitions. The museum also boasts a small gift shop and an intimate café.

The main building was completely reconstructed and ceremonially opened on October 28th, 2018, on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Czechoslovak Republic.
