St. George’s Convent

Galleries and Museums in Prague

Due to its critically bad condition, St. George's Convent was closed at the end of February 2012. Its collections of 19th century art were moved to the National Gallery's depository and should be exhibited in the future at Salmovský Palace.

St. George’s Convent is situated in a most charming area of the city in the massive Prague Castle complex and is a treat for lovers of 19th century art. In this attractive space operated by the National Gallery you can see specifically 19th century art in Bohemia from 1790 – 1910.

The comprehensive collection features over 350 paintings, decorative arts including intricate furniture, clothing, glass and silver, which are on loan from the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, and many more items from both private collections and the Prague Castle Collections. The exhibition seeks to compare the social links between 18th century artists and 19th century artists, specifically between Norbert Grund, František Xaver Procházka, Christian Seckel and Ludvík Kohl. The museum’s offer finishes off with artists born in the 1850s and 60s such as Jakub Schikaneder, Maxmilián Pirner, Beneš Knüpfer and Emanuel Krescenc Liška.

If you wish to learn more about artwork in Bohemia in the 19th century, St. George’s Convent in the Prague Castle complex is a good place to start. All lovers of art will enjoy this educational and interesting gallery exhibition assembled by the National Gallery of Art.
