The Municipal Library - City Gallery Prague

Galleries and Museums in Prague

Located in the city center of Prague and situated on Mariánské Square surrounded by the attractive Old Town City Hall, glamorous Baroque Clam Gallas Palace and a part of the massive Klementinum complex is City Gallery Prague’s exhibition hall at the Municipal Library.

Built from 1925 – 1928 and designed by František Roith, a student of Otto Wagner at the Vienna Academy, the Municipal Library was constructed as a culture house with exhibition space, lecture and concert halls. The eastern wing of the building is home to the flat of the Prague Mayor and is finished in the Art Deco style. The original intent of the culture house holds true to today as the structure now is home to the city library, while gallery space and lecture halls still exist.

City Gallery Prague acquired the extensive gallery space on the 2nd floor of the Municipal Library building in 1992. After a meticulous renovation the space has been showcasing contemporary exhibitions to the city of Prague and its visitors. The renovation included the creation of a new entrance in 1996, designed by architect Vlado Milunič and located on Valentinská Street.
