In the charming area of Prague Castle and the Royal Summer Palace is one of Prague’s most intriguing Art Nouveau structures, František Bílek’s villa.
František Bílek, a famous architect and Art Nouveau and Symbolist sculptor designed the villa, which dates back to 1911 to be used as his home and studio. It is interesting to note that the villa was built on the site of Prague’s former Baroque city gate. After the death of František Bílek, by his request the villa was turned into a museum showcasing his artwork.
The façade and the shape of the villa itself seem to symbolize nature and specific harvest seasons as the shape resembles a scythe hand tool while the front and side columns of the villa resemble corn sheaves, or bundles of tied corn. The bundles of corn tied together also mimic specific Egyptian columns. You can visit the villa, which belongs to City Gallery Prague that features original fittings, furniture reproductions based on Bílek’s designs and original artwork.
