Mánes

Galleries and Museums in Prague

Opened in 1930, the Mánes building with its spacious exhibition hall is one of the best examples of Functionalism not only in Prague but in Europe as well. Built by the Mánes Association of Fine Arts the sleek design of the building combined with the 15th century water tower showcases an intriguing architectural blend of old and modern.

The building is situated on the Vltava riverbank between the gorgeous National Theater and the modern Dancing House, designed by Frank O. Gehry. This much photographed Prague landmark was designed by Mánes member and architect Otakar Novotný and was built to house unique collections of avant-garde art from the Czech lands and abroad. The association wished to promote and showcase all forms of art to the general public in Prague, thanks to which the exhibition hall was able to display such heavy weight names as Piccasso. This important collaboration between the Mánes association and international artists helped to develop Czech Cubism and Rondocubism.

The mission of the Mánes Exhibition Hall remains the same, to support and promote all forms of visual arts. The building features 3 floors with one large and one small exhibition hall, offices, clubrooms, a restaurant with a terrace overlooking the river and a cafe. The ceiling of the lower level has a unique Cubist fresco by Emil Filla.
