Sternberg Palace

Galleries and Museums in Prague

In the large attractive square in front of the majestic Prague Castle you can find a small pathway leading to the beautiful Baroque Sternberg Palace. This hidden gem houses the National Gallery’s collection of old masters, specifically European art from antiquity to the end of the Baroque.

Built for Count Wenceslas Adalbert of Sternberg, the palace was constructed between 1697 and 1701 and today houses a variety of culture, art, history and atmosphere. The ground floor plan showcases a pretty café, perfect for discussing your favorite pieces after touring the palace, the Sternberg Garden complete with modern 20th century Czech sculptures, and German and Austrian art of the 15th through the 18th centuries (highlights include a gorgeous bronze sculpture of Diana and Callisto by Johann Spillenberger from 1676 and The Feast of the Rosemary from 1506 by Albrecht Durer). The first floor features the antiquity collection with Italian art from the 14th – 16th centuries and art from the Netherlands from the 15th – 16th centuries (one beautiful highlight form the first floor is the painting Eleonora of Toledo from 1572 by Agnolo Bronzino). The second floor contains 16th – 18th century Italian, Spanish, Flemish and Dutch art as well as French art from the 17th to the 18th century. The second floor features the most space and this is where you can find the famous Praying Christ from 1595-97 by El Greco and paintings by Reubens, Van Dyck, Jan I Brueghel and Pieter II Brueghel.

The Sternberg Palace is a top choice for lovers of art history in Europe. This vast museum is sure to please and is a must see for those interesting in classical art. The museum also features a small shop where you can purchase art books and publications from the National Gallery.
