Prague Castle Picture Gallery

Galleries and Museums in Prague

The massive Prague Castle complex holds many wonders. If you so happen to be a fan of classical art, then you cannot miss the Prague Castle Picture Gallery, a permanent collection that boasts the best art that belongs to the Prague Castle.

The exhibition showcases about one hundred paintings out of the 4,000 paintings that the castle has in its possession. The possession of such a splendid collection of paintings is mostly thanks to Rudolf II, an avid art lover and collector of all cultural objects. The interior of the gallery is lovely and features a dark orange and teal color scheme along with wooden floors and vaulted ceilings.

The fine paintings on display at the Prague Castle Picture Gallery include works by such famous art world names as Peter Paul Rubens, Girolamo Bedoli, Titian, who was rumored to be Rudolf II’s favorite painter, Bartholomeus Spranger, Norbert Grund, and Vivano Codazzi, who was one of the founders of architectural landscape painting. As in most classical art galleries many of the works focus on the theme of mythology and reference Ovid’s Metamorphosis, best shown in Bernaert de Rijckere’s painting Diana Surprised by Actaeon in which unfortunate Actaeon is turned into a stag for surprising the bathing goddess. Other highlights include Latona and the Rustics, and Baucis and Philemon, both by Paulo Fiammingo, which are allegories of water and fire. The Prague Castle Picture Gallery is a small and elegant space worth seeing very much if you are a fan of classical painting.
