Czech Museum of Music

Galleries and Museums in Prague

Located in lovely Mala Strana, which is also known as the Lesser Quarter is the Czech Museum of Music. Situated in the former Baroque church of St. Mary Magdalene, which was built in the 17th century, the museum is a must for any lover of music.

The church of St. Mary Magdalene was constructed in the 17th century and was certainly a gorgeous Baroque structure but was rebuilt as it was used also as an archive and police barracks. The result of the building and its varied history is an attractive blend of architectural styles that is atmospheric to say the least. The grand assembly hall is especially impressive and makes a wonderful setting for live classical concerts that take place there regularly.

The National Museum has turned this lovely space into an intriguing museum of music that will impress all lovers of the art form. The Czech Museum of Music boasts among many other instruments one of the biggest organs of 17th century Prague. At this educational and entertaining museum you can learn about Renaissance and early Baroque music, popular music of the 20th century, musical experiments in the 20th century, Bohemian and Moravian violins and how they are constructed, wind instruments, harps, folk music and its instruments, mechanical instruments and much more. Visit the Czech Museum of Music and be transported into the rich world of music!
