Former Parliament Building

Galleries and Museums in Prague

Located next to the picturesque neo Renaissance main building of the National Museum is the Former Communist Parliament Building, which is now the newest branch of the National Museum.

This strange eyesore is a Communist era building that resembles a massive black table perched on the unfortunate building located underneath. The large black structure was built after the old Exchange building was destroyed in the late 60s. It is interesting to note that the glass structure is complete with nuclear shelters and was the setting for acceptance of the demands of the Velvet Revolution in 1989. After the fall of Communism the building was used as the Czech home of Radio Free Europe (rumor has it that the building was rented from then president Vaclav Havel for 1 CZK per year). Radio Free Europe has since moved out of the immediate city center.

Now home to the National Museum the space features temporary exhibitions, tours of the former parliament rooms and an interesting café complete with original Communist era furniture and décor. It doesn’t get more authentic than this; if you are interested in Communist era architecture then the Former Parliament Building is a definite must!
