Lobkowicz Palace

Galleries and Museums in Prague

If you wish to see one of the most comprehensive and interesting exhibitions about a royal family in Prague, Czech Republic pay a visit to the Lobkowicz Palace. This lovely palace showcases the intriguing private collection of the Lobkowicz family and is not only one of best collections in Prague but also in Europe as well.

Czech Nobleman Jaroslav of Pernstejn built the palace in the 16th century, although the Lobkowicz family dates back to the 14th century making it one of the oldest Bohemian families. The Lobkowicz family and their Prague Castle palace have both played an important role in history as during the 1618 Defenestration of Prague the Catholics hid from the Protestants there. After the fall of the Iron Curtain the family saw their palaces and stately collections returned to them as almost everything they owned was confiscated during the Nazi and Communist regimes.

The impressive collection housed at the Lobkowicz Palace includes such gems as two large scale paintings of London by Canaletto, The River Thames on Lord Mayer’s Day and The River Thames with Westminster Bridge, the painting Haymaking by Pieter Brueghel the Elder, decorative arts, original music scores with notes made by Mozart and Beethoven, instruments, intricate colorful earthenware and much more. The current owner of the Lobkowicz Estate, William Lobkowicz recorded the highly recommended audio tour guide. At the Lobkowicz Palace you can see not only the wondrous permanent collection on the second floor but also several rooms on the first floor that depict how the family used to live. Learn about one of the Bohemia’s most important families and enjoy an afternoon spent wisely.
