THE MUSEUM OF DECORATIVE ARTS IS CURRENTLY BEING RENOVATED AND IS SET TO OPEN IN JULY 2017.
The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague is situated in the Old Town district of Prague in a cultural square that is made up of the world famous Rudolfinum concert hall and various educational institutions including the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design and the Faulty of Philosophy. The neo Renaissance building that houses this whimsical collection of decorative arts dates back to the end of the 1800s and was designed by Josef Schulz, the same genius behind the gorgeous Rudolfinum (co-author) and the reconstruction of the National Theater in Prague. The front façade of the building boasts reliefs by Antonín Popp and Bohuslav Schnirch that feature arts and crafts techniques such as weaving, basket and lace making, gold and lock smith crafts, jewelry and tin making, wood carving, printing, book binding, stone work, glass making, pottery, porcelain, manufacturing and more. Once you enter the pretty building you will be impressed with the grand staircase, colorfully painted ceilings, intricate stuccowork and much more. The building houses the permanent collection of the Decorative Arts Museum and focuses on the world of intricate decoration in glass, furniture, textiles, watches, jewelry, clocks and more from the Renaissance to the middle of the 19th century. The collection is situated on two floors of the palace, while a special wing is reserved for intriguing temporary exhibitions. The lower level of the Museum of Decorative Arts has a gift shop with art and architecture publications, jewelry reproductions, postcards and more. There is also a cozy café where you can sip on drinks while contemplating decorative arts through the years in Bohemia.
